Toudi Kempo
The first iteration of this website was created by Mark Perry in 1998, and
we had a few articles on there that are preserved here for posterity.
Steve had formed the Toudi Kempo Research Foundation, a group which required
its members to train outside the major karate organizations. The
purpose of the Toudi Kempo group was to disseminate the knowledge Steve had
acquired of the underpinnings of the traditions and to bring them up to date
by returning their combative essentials, or, as he put it, 'putting the
tiger back in its skin.'
None of this worked out too well. If MMA had not come into the
picture, I guess Steve would still be battling it out with the traditions
and their masters. It's not necessary anymore because so much of what
he was saying back then is taken for granted now. Writing this in 2011
with MMA at the forefront of the martial arts, it seems obvious that karate
was lacking in combative essentials and needed a serious reality check.
Back before MMA, and in the years when the sport was still establishing
itself, none of what Steve was saying was publicly accepted. He was
stonewalled by a great many people.
Here are a couple of pieces from the old website.
